Jamil Adéwalé Kasumu, affectionately known as "Baba Kasumu," is the founder and Executive Director of Ade Jembe Fola. For over a decade, he has been organizing workshops in African Drum & Dance, Chess, Martial Arts, Computers, and Finance for in-school and after-school programs in Western New York. His dedication to education and community engagement has made a significant impact on countless students and participants.
As a highly skilled and talented drummer, Kasumu is also a patient and inspiring teacher. He has collaborated with renowned organizations such as the Boys & Girls Club, YMCA, Musicians United for Superior Education, University of Buffalo, Explore & More Children's Museum, and Buffalo Kwanzaa. These partnerships have allowed him to share his expertise and passion for African drumming and dance with diverse audiences.
Native to Nigeria, Kasumu's passion for his community drives his work. As the leader of the only African-owned drum and dance organization in Western New York, he aims to spread the joy and cultural significance of the Jembe. Having played the Jembe since the age of 10, guided by some of the world's most renowned teachers and performers, Kasumu was given the name Ade Jembe Fola by his mentor, Raymond Sylla from Dakar, Senegal, which translates to "Royal teacher bringing people together." His mission is to use music and dance to foster unity and cultural appreciation within his community.
